Common Challenges with Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a natural and rewarding experience for many mothers and babies. However, it can also be challenging at times. Here are some of the most common challenges of breastfeeding:

Pain or discomfort. Some women experience pain or discomfort when breastfeeding, especially in the first few days or weeks. This is usually due to incorrect positioning or latching on. If you are experiencing pain, it is important to seek help early on.

Low milk supply. Some women worry that they do not have enough milk for their baby. Most cases are due to an issue with supply and demand and most issues can be worked through.

Engorgement. Engorgement is a condition that occurs when the breasts become overfull with milk, swollen from fluid or both. This can be painful and make it difficult to breastfeed. Engorgement can be treated with appropriate expression of milk, preferably by the baby, and maneuvers to move lymphatic fluid back to the lymphatic system.

Plugged ducts and mastitis. Plugged ducts and mastitis are two complications that can occur when milk is not flowing freely through the breast. Plugged ducts are painful, tender lumps in the breast. Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention. At Village Lactation Medicine, we can see you for these issues.

Returning to work. Returning to work can be a challenge for breastfeeding mothers. It can be difficult to pump milk and to find time to breastfeed your baby when you are away from home. There are many resources available to help breastfeeding mothers as it is a right not a privilege to provide human milk to your baby.

Lack of support. Lack of support from family, friends, or healthcare providers can make breastfeeding more challenging. It is important to have a support system in place to help you through the challenges of breastfeeding.

Despite these challenges, breastfeeding/lactation is a wonderful way to nourish your baby and bond with them. With support and education, most women can successfully breastfeed their babies for many months.
